Thanks!
Monday, Sept. 11th is the Court of Honor. We will start 7pm sharp in the Alspaugh Center (MTUMC main level). ALL SCOUTS should attend (wear Class A) and bring at least one parent. A COH is not just about rank advancement — lots of information about the Scout year will be shared. Expect the meeting to last a little longer than usual — grabbing a bite to eat beforehand is advised.
Monday’s COH is also the first popcorn money turn-in + reverse raffle. Remember, no cash — only checks payable to “Troop 934.” Any scout who registers a popcorn or peanut sale of any size is automatically entered in the Week 1 reverse raffle (after Week 1 the minimum is $100 of incremental sales). Any questions please see https://www.troop934.org/popcorn-2023/ For raffle prizes this year we went fewer/bigger/better — this week we are giving away
Osprey Heritage Scarab 30L Backpack,
REI Zephyr 25 Recycled Sleeping Bag, and
LifeStraw Peak Series Straw.
Also note that our Popcorn Kernal Mr. Love has posted the first Show-and-Sell (Storefront) sign-ups here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090E4DADA828A5FA7-storefront#/ Additional dates and times will be added. You may sign up for more than one but please honor the dates you do sign up for.
The day before the COH, on Sunday, Sept 10th Pack 910 (St. Paul’s, 520 Summit Street) is hosting a field day/pizza party from 3.30 to 5.00 in the playground and portico areas of the church (enter from Pilot View St. on the lower level). Pack 910 needs 4-5 scouts to lead this event. Please let Mr. Lobb know if you can come — daniel@cubscouts910.org or 336-413-3937.
Sign-ups for the Stokes County Campout Sept 15th-17th are currently live on the troop website, here https://www.troop934.org/calendar/. This will be a really fun, full trip with BOTH zip-lining and tubing on the Dan River. Special thanks to George and Diane Clinard for helping offset a significant portion of the total cost of this trip. Additional leaders are needed! Parents, please note — per the Troop policy signups for Scouts will close on Tuesday, Sept 12th at 11.30pm. Remember that campout signups are via Eventbrite only. Thank you for your understanding.
Sign-ups for the October Canoeing at Kerr Scott and November Backpacking at Camp Daniel Boone/Shining Rock Wilderness Area go live right after the COH. Start here https://www.troop934.org/calendar/ As previously announced, the Lost Sea was unable to host us in December and we are attempting to reschedule the Cave Camping trip in January 2024.
As a reminder, while the Seabase ’24 trip is now on a waiting list, there is plenty of room for Scouts and Leaders on our first High Adventure trip to Summit Bechtel Reserve. Please see https://www.troop934.org/summit-experience-24/ for dates, a cost estimate, and other details.
Finally, a word about the troop website/email server. We are a victim of our own success – we have more than 150 subscribers, and when you send out that many emails at once Google and other email providers will sometimes flag you as spam-bot and sweep your important email update to a spam folder. We are working on a solution. In the meantime, please do not assume that everyone has gotten this email on the first distribution — feel free to forward this email link, and keep spreading the word.
Merit Badge Monday continues TONIGHT. Mr. Danhauer will be doing Scoutmaster Conferences, Mr. Golden will be doing Boards of Review and Ms. Clinard will recording completions/advancement. Fall Court of Honor is Monday, Sept. 11th! (Remember no Scout meeting Sept. 4th due to Labor Day).
This coming Saturday, 5th August is an Eagle Scout Workday for Patterson Handy’s Eagle Project. We will start at 8.00am at Simons Community Garden located at 1922 South Martin Luther King Drive in Winston Salem.
Patterson is building planter boxes along the fence line for the Community Garden. Any scout that is available to help to please come out and help. Please bring work gloves, safety glasses, and be properly dressed to work outside.
Please contact Patterson’s family at (336) 408-4171 with any questions.
For those of you who are not aware, Wagon Orders are where a Scout may order an “inventory” of popcorn to have in hand and sell on the spot. Some families find the Wagon Sales approach to be easier as there is no delivery step in mid-November – these families can be “done” with popcorn by mid-September. Wagon Sales can also be used to ensure a Scout reaches, at a minimum, his individual popcorn quota. The inventory will arrive September 8th or 9th together with the Troop’s Show-and-Sell (Storefront) order. Placing a Wagon Order is completely optional as it does create a financial commitment to the Troop.
Additionally, if you established an online Camp Masters account during the 2022 Popcorn Sale you may be getting marketing emails from Camp Masters. That is because – while it is not a point of emphasis for Troop 934 — the online popcorn sale for Old Hickory Council actually starts in a few days on 1st August. If you elect to do so you are more than welcome to start your online sales early (but first please confirm your account is configured properly and that you are shown as a member of Troop 934 in the Old Hickory Council!).
For additional information regarding the 2023 Popcorn Sale please see the dedicated page on the Troop 934 website, here: https://www.troop934.org/popcorn-2023/. Our Popcorn Chair, Matt Love, will be reviewing this and other information during a parents and scouts popcorn meeting during the regular 7pm Scout Meeting on Monday, 28th August, so please Save the Date.
The Annual Deep Creek Tubing / Native American Educational trip will be Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6. We will leave Mt. Tabor Methodist Friday at Noon so we can get to Bryson City in time to set up camp and attend the Cherokee Campfire Friday evening.
After breakfast in camp, we will tube Deep Creek all day and attend the Unto the Hills Outdoor Drama Saturday evening in Cherokee. Those who wish to may go to the Cherokee Museum Saturday afternoon as well.
This campout is always a fun one and a great way to kick off the new Scouting year. We are in need of adult leaders so if you have ever thought about coming on a 934 campout, this would be a good one to get your feet wet.
I hope you are getting ready for Scout Summer Camp at Camp Raven Knob! Thank you to everyone that turned in their money and paperwork. If you are still getting everything together, please remember that you need to send health forms and insurance card pictures/copies to Tonya Scott at t934leaderadm@gmail.com .
Raven Parents – All the Raven Scouts have the same summer camp schedule developed by our Raven Leaders. This is a fun schedule that will move them along in rank and merit badges as well as prepare them to participate in more trips with the troop next fall by having them work on their swimming merit badge. Since some Ravens may be new to scouting, Camp Raven Knob and/or our troop, we thought it was best to keep them together during their first year at summer camp.
Packing List — There is a packing list on our troop website – click here. For adults and scouts (no Ravens, please – they can help next year), there will be a Troop Equipment (no personal gear) packing party on Saturday, July 14th at 10.00am (note time change AWAY from Friday, July 13th 6:30 pm) in the Boy Scout Room at Mt Tabor UMC (3543 Robinhood Rd. Winston Salem).
Trunks and Locks — We always get questions about the trunks and locks. Pictures of a trunk and a lock are below. The trunk needs to fit under the bunk in the tent. The trunk in the picture is 12 inches high.
Departure — On Sunday, July 16th we will meet at Mt Tabor High School (342 Petree Rd, Winston Salem, NC 27106) at 10:00 am. We meet in the Bus Parking Lot. Please note – we are not leaving from MTUMC because the church services are in progress during our departure time. High schools have lots of different parking lots and entrances, to get into the bus lot, turn into the entrance that is close to 215 Petree Road and you will see our vehicles and drive straight back.
What to Wear: For departure, the boys should wear their Class A uniform. Merit badge sashes are not needed. However, those in the OA should bring their OA sash.
What to Bring: The boys should bring a bag lunch – fast food is fine. The first camp meal is not until dinner.
What Not To Bring: Scouts should leave their electronics, especially their phones, at home. Please note the leaders will be confiscating any electronics if they see them. The scouts can “unplug” for a week.
On Sunday, we have several stations that scout families will work through before the scouts board the bus.
Check in – Verify contact information and paperwork drop off.
Medication Drop – Please be sure medication is in a ziplock bag, labeled with instructions and your scout’s name
Troop “Class B” T-shirt Sale – Troop T-shirts will be for Sale or you can pick up one you have already ordered
Trunk Extra Lock Keys & Combination Drop Off – Please be sure to bring an extra trunk lock key (labeled with your scout’s name) or a copy of your scout’s lock combination. The leaders keep the keys and combinations in case your scout loses his key or forgets his combination.
Camp Phone Numbers — The boys will be staying at the Deer Valley Campsite. The camp phone number is 336-352-4307. It is manned from 8:30 am – 8:00 pm every day. You can also reach Mr. Danhauer at 336-414-5045.
Wednesday Family Dinner — On Wednesday, July 19th , there will be a potluck dinner with your scout. Please plan to be there at 5:30 pm and this year the troop will be providing BBQ (pulled pork), beans, and slaw. So please bring complimentary side dishes. The scouts really look forward to this. We will eat at the Chapel area and after dinner parents can attend the evening campfire around 8:15 pm.
Directions to Camp Raven Knob (It takes about an hour.)
From Winston-Salem, take US-52 N.
Veer onto 74 West heading towards I77. Just before I77, take exit for Hwy 89 and head west (L).
Travel 89 for about 5 miles. When you see the farm silo on your left, slow down.
Turn L on Ladonia Church Rd (big CRK sign at intersection).
Go to the end of Ladonia Church and turn left. Go 150 yards and veer right. This road will take you straight into camp.
As you enter, go straight past several buildings. You will go down a steep hill with a curve and come out facing a log cabin and a small lake.
Go straight across past the cabin and park in the grass.
You will see the covered bridge that takes you to the chapel.
Return — The boys will return to the Mt Tabor UMC (3543 Robinhood Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27106) on Saturday July 22st around 11:30 am. The boys are expected to unpack the troop equipment before leaving the church parking lot.
Early Pick-Up — Early pickup of scouts by parents on Friday evening is highly discouraged and MUST be cleared directly with the Scoutmaster (and no one else) well in advance.
You can send mail to your scout during camp by using the address below:
Scout Name Unit Number (Troop 934) Camp Raven Knob 266 Raven Knob Road Mount Airy, NC 27030
